Finding your gateway to the holy by making the pilgrimage

in the unfolding of the universal story of life

A creation centred spirituality

Gaia Education Services asserts that we are in a time of transition, shifting from an old worldview supported, particularly, by religious institutions which are in a process of disintegration. This is characterised by a mass exodus of adults and a youth who are increasingly dissatisfied with religious institutions, who insist on a disciplined morality and a law and order spirituality that has become irrelevant. People are becoming less religious but not less spiritual. People in this era of unprecedented change are out of tune with their inner selves and are seeking ways that will reconnect them to the beauty, the love, the mystery, the sacred, the earth, which will give them meaning and purpose, that which will sustain all life in the universe. What is needed is a spirituality that will enable people to find their feet in the diversity and turbulence of the 21st Century. Hence, a creation centered spirituality. A spirituality that celebrates the sacredness of Gaia and the interdependence of all life in our universe.

Creation centered spirituality is an integrated spirituality, which transcends the idea of one thing being more important than something else. Everything is considered important in the life experience of the person. In this context spirituality is not about religion or attendance at church, or obedience to rules and laws, but a spirituality that is about the search for meaning, discovering a sense of the sacred, and giving space and time for the individual to discover their own unique gateway to the holy. In this integrated context spirituality is the;

"Innate wisdom of the human heart that enlivens a zest for life, a search for meaning and purpose, a love for all that is good and beautiful, a passion to create a better world, a sensitivity to the life- energy (God) that permeates the entire cosmos."

(1992 D. O’Murchu, Our World in Transition p.58)

How people go about making this odyssey (pilgrimage) and expressing this inner wisdom is one of the urgent questions facing educators in this unprecedented time in our history.

GES responds to this new phenomenon by offering retreat experiences for students in the Middle School and post compulsory years, and to post school groups. GES can organise and plan retreat experiences in collaboration with school communities and non school groups. At the school level GES prefers retreat groups to be organised in class groups of no more than 50 in either half-day, full-day, twilight or overnight experiences.
